Mario Impemba walks into wrong press box as Matt Shepherd prepares for first TV broadcast as new play-by-play man

LAKELAND (CCN) — Mario Impemba walked into the wrong press box Thursday morning as he prepared to broadcast in his new gig with the Boston Red Sox. Impemba worked for the Detroit Tigers on their TV broadcasts for 17 years with partner Rod Allen until they fired late last season after a physical altercation. "Just out of pure habit," Impemba told the Detroit Free Press about entering the Joker Marchant Stadium Press box where Matt Shepherd was preparing to debut in the booth as the new official play-by-play man. Shepherd worked 20 games last season after Impemba was fired. Kirk Gibson, who was already alternating games with Allen as the color guy, took over the rest of last season with Shepherd and is the new primary color man for this year's TV broadcasts on Fox Sports Detroit. Thursday's spring training game was the first of the season for Gibson and Shepherd together. An earlier spring training game was televised but Fox Sports Detroit used Minnesota's broadcasters.
